About Mike Murphy
Mike started coaching almost directly following the end of his professional and collegiate playing career. Playing at Arizona State University under now manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, Pat Murphy (no relation), he was a part of the 2008 and 2009 team that saw MLB talent with the likes of Jason Kipness, Mike Leake, Ike Davis, Austin Barnes, and more. That 2008 team set a school record 15 MLB draft picks that year, as well as a trip to Omaha for the College World Series.
Currently, during Mikes lengthy stint as a coach, he has seen numerous players come through his program that has cultivated to over 20 division 1 prospects, and quite a few MLB prospects. Dylan Beavers, probably the most notable prospect as of late, is now in the Baltimore Orioles organization currently sitting at Triple AAA affiliate Norfolk Tides, waiting for his turn to burst in the bigs. All signs point to this being his year, so keep an eye out for one of MMElites premier prospects.
Not only Dylan, but many others have seen professional success, being in and around Mike’s guidance over the years. Athletes like Cooper Benson, Justin Trimble, and even major league player Brooks Lee have all been coached by Mike throughout the years.
Lesson Structure
Over the years, MMElite has refined his lessons from strictly mechanical based adjustments, to where it stands now. How we like to describe it, we train holistic athletic development.
As the spearhead for almost every sport, movement patters trump all. Those who move well, play well. Understanding this, MMElite has grown and cultivated our knowledge of coaching the sport almost every day for the past 10 years into distinct and unique drills to hone these athletic movements.
This is not to say there aren’t specific mechanical improvements to be made in any players specific repertoire, but we know and understand that the best athletes have the highest chance of success as they move up the ranks.
Structure:
Lessons will typically include a personal static stretch prior to warming up, typically done by the player before they begin.
*This is an important aspect of the lesson plan often times not taken seriously. Athletes should arrive early, and have a plan to get their body ready to move and get better. If you ever have any questions about pre-workout stretch and warmup routines, please ask, as we can absolutely help develop one for you that sets you up for success.
Then moves into a dynamic warm up, usually something non baseball specific like throwing a football and running routes.
Catch play usually follows the dynamic warm up, then progresses into defensive drills that incorporate these ideas of athletic and explosive movement. While rare, there are instances where the full lesson is spent on these drills, as they are in fact, the most important part of your career. Being able to move effeciently and explosively, as the key to sucess in any sport. Albeit baseball, football, soccer, hockey, basketball. You name it, the best players in any given sector are high motor athletes with wiry frames that can produce force at a higher level than the average joe.
Offensive practice like BP, simulated games, and mechanical breakdown usually ends the lesson, and is almost seen as a reward, because as we know, hitting is the most fun aspect of the game to most. Most athletes hit in groups, and can and should use this opportunity to help each other grow and learn the game.
Footnote:
It is important to note that no lesson is exactly the same as the last. When Mike, or any of our other coaches see something that needs to be worked on, it is possible for it to be the forefront of the lesson thereon out. This isn’t to scare you away, it is just for you to understand that Mike and his staff truly cares about the development of each player. There is no cookie cutter lesson plan that works for everyone, as all athletes move differently.
We have seen time and time again that the athletes that take what is said from Mike and apply it into their game and life, have a higher chance of success and moving up the ranks. There is no plan that is the same, no true formula, but success leaves clues, and MMElite is here to guide you on that path.
